Feilding Win Hurricanes Cup As Central Region Shield Begins
At Palmerston North’s Sport and Rugby Institute, Feilding High School secured a Top 4 berth for the National Secondary School playoffs next weekend, winning the Hurricanes Cup by defeating Hastings Boys High School by 52 points to 26. Hastings were still in contention at half-time when Feilding led by 19 points to 12, but the second-half was dominant for the home side. Feilding now joins Manukura in next week’s Top 4 matches to be played in Palmerston North.

Turning to the Central Region Shield, in two close matches played in Wellington and Palmerston North, it was the defending Central Region Shield champions, Wellington, who scraped home against a valiant Hawkes Bay side and the Hurricanes Heartland team, who upset Manawatu at home.

Leading 17 points to 3 at half-time at Rugby League Park, Wellington looked like they had the measure of the visiting Hawkes Bay side, but 19 unanswered points in the second spell scored by the visitors had Wellington looking into the abyss, with the score 22 points to 17 with less than 10 minutes to play. A costly missed conversion out in front of the posts by Hawkes Bay gave Wellington the opportunity to win with a converted try, with 5 minutes to play. The full-time score was 24 points to 22.

Meanwhile, at Ongley Park in Palmerston North, the Hurricanes Heartland side took a 17 points to 12 half-time lead against Manawatu in the second Central Region Shield match of the day, with both teams scoring two tries in the first spell. Both teams scored tries in the second half, but Manawatu’s discipline cost them dearly, with two successful penalty kicks by the Hurricanes team proving to be the difference.
