Annual Under 15 Boys' Tournament

As part of Winter Tournament Week, the annual Under 15 Tournament comprises twenty teams from secondary schools (on an invitational basis) who compete in a Cup and Plate section for the Rex Kerr Trophy.

Annual Under 16 Boys' Tournament

Every year in the third term school holidays, the Council holds New Zealand's premier tournament for Under 16 players, comprising teams from all member Provincial Unions, competing in two divisions for the Don Broughton Shield, the Saracens Cup and the Manaaki Tangata Trophy.

Annual Under 18 Boys' Competition

Every year in September, the Council holds a competition for Under 18 teams from member Provincial Unions, competing in two divisions for the John Hornal Shield and Gordon Noble-Campbell Cup.

Annual Under 20 Tournament

This competition comprises teams from Wellington, Hawkes Bay and Manawatu, and a Hurricanes Heartland Team (comprising players from the Council's member Heartland Provincial Unions), competing for the Central Region Shield on a home and away basis.

Annual Under 21 Heartland Development Series

Comprising teams from the regions Heartland Provincial Unions, the Heartland Development Series is held annually over two weeks, with teams competing for the Hurricanes Cup.

Girls' Rugby Development Programmes

Every year, with the support of New Zealand Rugby, the Council provides Development Days, an Under 15 Tournament, and Under 16 and Under 18 Development Camps for young women within the Hurricanes Region.

Annual Hurricanes Sevens Tournament

The best secondary school Sevens players in the region (in Boys and Girls divisions) compete for the Hurricanes Secondary Schools Sevens Cup, hosted by Wairarapa-Bush.

Hawkes Bay & Manawatu Secure Round 1 Central Region Shield Victories

Defending champion Wellington’s hopes of securing a 13th consecutive Shield victory took a hit at Tremain Field earlier today, as Hawkes Bay came away with 29 points to 14 first round win, after leading 12 points to 7 at the break. In total Hawkes Bay scored 5 tries to 2.

In the other first round match played at Colquhoun Park in Palmerston North, Manawatu defeated the Hurricanes Heartland side by 30 points, 52 to 22 after leading by 26 points to 5 at half-time. Wellington were the only side to not bank any championship points in the first round, with next week’s fixture against Manawatu in Wellington a must-win fixture for the defending champions.

In the secondary school playoffs, Napier BHS made an emphatic 60 points to 33 statement against Hastings BHS in Napier, while Wellington champions St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream will play Napier BHS in the "sky blue" final for the Hurricanes Cup next weekend, after defeating a dogged Lindisfarne College team by 34 points to 24 in Hastings.

In the Girls Division, Manukura have won the Rex Kerr Cup unopposed, after St. Mary’s College defaulted their opportunity to compete the Cup Final.
