Maximum Points For HKRFU And WBRFU In Under 20 Series Round 1
The first round of the annual Hurricanes Under 20 Series saw Horowhenua-Kapiti and Wairarapa-Bush earn maximum points, in fixtures played in Napier and Masterton on Saturday.
At Trust House Memorial Park in Masterton, Wairarapa-Bush scored a whopping 11 tries in a match in which 84 points were scored. The half-time score reflected a closer tussle, with visitors Whanganui have scored two converted tries to the hosts five, however the try-scoring was entirely lop-sided in the second-half with Wairarapa-Bush scoring six further, to Whanganui’s solitary score, resulted in a full-time result of 63 to 21. For the hosts, Cyrus Wilson, Te Aorangi Kingi and Cory Bracewell all dotted down twice.
Meanwhile, in Napier, Horowhenua-Kapiti clawed back a nine point half-time deficit to win their fixture against Poverty Bay by 40 points to 35. Poverty Bay looked comfortably in control after the first 40 minutes, leading by 21 points to 12. However Horowhenua-Kapiti scored four second-half tries, (all converted by right wing Solomua Sagalala-Iose) to clinch the match by 40 points to 35.
Next weekend all four sides converge on the Bulls Rugby Football Club for Rounds 2 and 3 of the Series, to be played in back-to-back matches on Saturday and Sunday, with the Hurricanes Heartland Under 20 side to be named by Head Coach Darren Larsen to compete in the upcoming Central Region Shield competition, at the conclusion of the weekend’s fixtures.
